The real tea party movement

Sorry to be harping on the subject but I am not a little fed up with the way the nascent (if that) Tea Party Movement in this country has already been co-opted by the Conservative Party, by the way so many commentators here seem unable to understand that and by the way American well wishers rejoice in developments that they would not countenance for one moment in their own country and their own Tea Party Movement.

This is what it should really be like as we hear from Arizona:
The organizers of the four largest Arizona Tea Party organizations – including the Tucson Tea Party, Greater Phoenix Tea Party, Flagstaff Tea Party, and Mohave County Tea Party – issued a joint press release regarding their unified decision to decline endorsing a candidate in the Arizona Senate primary race between John McCain, J.D. Hayworth, and Jim Deakin.

“The Tea Party is a non-partisan, grassroots movement that stands for limited government, free markets, and fiscal responsibility. Both McCain and Hayworth’s records during their many years in Washington leave much to be desired on these issues,” said Robert Mayer, co-founder of the Tucson Tea Party. “It is their job to hold themselves up to these values and fight for our votes.”

Other tea party organizers across the state agreed that the local organizations should not endorse so early if at all.

“It is not appropriate to make an endorsement in this race at the drop of a hat, as some other groups are doing,” said Kelly Townsend, organizer of the Greater Phoenix Tea Party. “The movement must stand for ideas, and do everything possible to provide information to people so that they can make the best personal decisions.”
Non-partisan, grassroots movement. Got that? Not let us support the Conservative Party and if they do not deliver or promise to deliver what we want, let us just accept that they are better than what we have.

Maybe I should restart the Red Lion Talks with a different slant.

  1. Its frustrating, but the grouping I am part of, Tea Party Patriots continues to make sure people know we are non-partisan and focus on our core fiscal conservative values. The Conservative Party like the Republican Party will make attempts to co-opt it and I know the ones running the UK version are clever enough to resist any such moves.

  2. I hope you are right, Andrew. I have no worries about the immediate organizers but I cannot see how it can go anywhere with Conservative politicians in charge.

  3. I worry about subversion, think back to the countryside alliance, when it was run by a woman (who's name escapes me) they organised 2 great marches in london, I went to the second one and the media and government lied about attendance, we were there at 9am near the start, queueing to get to the start, we parked in the old Battersea power station yard, a huge place, there were perhaps 2 coaches and our transit minibus, at the end the official tally was just under 200000 but not updated since 10 am, it was now gone 12, standing looking down Picadilly there was a solid mass of people walking towards us, I counted, roughly 80 wide and going the 3/4 mile to Pall Mall, I guess somewhere around 60 to 100000 marchers, and at that time there was still a queue to start, it took about 20 or 30 mins to walk Picadilly, at the time I worked out about 500000 to 900000 marchers protested that day, the only crowds I have seen like that was the Queens birthday, that was more widespread but given as three million, the "oficcial" headcount was 165000 on the media at the time (I notice now wikpedia say 4000000) then the running of the CA changed and it all went quiet so now country folk cannot hunt rabbits with their lurchers, in fact it could be illegal to drag hunt as the law is banning hunting mammals with dogs(I think) se here we have an apolitical large body rendered useless by the inserting of a lapdog in to the driving seat, conservative principles are the crux of civillised life and what dragged us out of caves, we need to cherish them.(sorry if this rambled!)
