Fifty-five years ago

This is where it started on October 23, 1956 in Budapest. Members of the Budapest university demonstrate by the statue of the Polish General Bem.

  1. In November 1956 in my first year at infant school in a small mining village in Cumberland we had a collection for the refugees from Hungary. My mother gave me 2 shillings towards the fund.

  2. Ah yes, I was in my first year of primary school and we were at the receiving end of people's generosity, though it was after the Revolution was put down. I can testify that we got the Swiss milk donated by Nestle and the presents sent by other children from the West. Your two shillings were not wasted.
